Abstract/Summary Traditional methods of project delivery are being challenged by Design and Construct (D&C) and alliance contracting (similar to Partnering in the USA or PFI in the UK) . In D&C projects, the design management function often rests with the prime contractor or with an alliance partnership, rather than with the specialist designers or consultants. As a consequence, construction companies, which traditionally were not directly concerned with design management, are now taking a proactive role in the design management function, within a total project management process. This paper discusses these issues through a case study of one engineering company's experiences with integrating design and construction.
