Abstract Colposcopy is an established technique for diagnosis in gynecology. A recently developed optical instrument is the contact microcolpohysteroscope for macroscopic examination of the cervical mucosa. This article evaluates the application of the contact microcolpohysteroscope for examination and recording of the surface topography of the hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity. This is a promising, noninvasive method of observation of tissue surfaces at high magnification. Modifications of the method for oral use are described, and potential applications for diagnosis and research in dentistry are proposed.
