Abstract The carbon-13 n.m.r. spectra of a number of substituted naphthalenes have been determined and individual resonances assigned. Substituent effects have been deduced and compared with corresponding effects in benzene. Some correlation with substituent parameters is evident but effects in the unsubstituted nucleus may arise less from conventional changes in electron distribution than from small molecular distortions.
