Abstract High density polyethylene tapes and fibres have been grafted with allyl alcohol by vapour phase radiation-induced graft polymerization. Grafting was confirmed by FTIR, XPS and a dye assay. The ratio of surface to bulk grafted hydroxyl groups was higher for gel spun fibre as compared to natural draw ratio tape. ESR indicates that allyl alcohol reacts with polyethylene radicals during irradiation but termination is too rapid for the nature of any new radicals to be identified.
