Abstract This study concerns the optimization of multispan Prager-structures whose support positions are unknown a priori and are to be chosen optimally. The intermediate supporting points are either those of simple supports or roller supports. Using calculus of variations, the necessary optimality conditions are derived which form the basis for the development of a general systematic procedure in determining the optimal layout of the multispan Prager-structures. An example is presented to illustrate the procedure.
