Abstract An unambiguous synthesis for each of the monohydroxy derivatives of 2, 5-diphenyl-1, 3, 4-oxa-diazole is reported. The use of 2, 5-diphenyloxazole as a sensitive indicator of aryl hydrocarbon hydroxy lase activity has recently been refined by an investigation into the metabolism of the reagent in human lymphocytes and rat liver microsomes, and by the identification of three metabolites.' The structures of three metabolites were determined by direct g.s.-m.s. and h.p.1.c. comparisons with authentic specimens made by unambiguous methods.2.
