Abstract Rate data for the concurrent reaction of hexamethylditin with dimethyltin dichloride and with two of the products of this reaction in methanol solution at 30°C have been analysed in terms of individual steps. Line-broadening phenomena in the system have been studied, providing evidence of the intermediacy of dimethyltin and its insertion into tin-chlorine bonds. A general mechanism for this and related reactions is presented.
