Abstract Lumped parameter mass transfer models based upon a tanks-in-series representation of fixed bed adsorption columns are derived. The effects of external and internal diffusion and axial dispersion are incorporated in the model for both single and multisolute (competitive) adsorption. The advantages of this type of model as compared with distributed parameter models are discussed. The model is validated against experimental data for both the single solute and bi-solute adsorption.
