Abstract A lumping technique is used to show that the rate equations governing the deactivation of variously shaped porous and non-porous catalyst pellets with internal and external mass transfer resistances are equivalent when the Thiele modulus of the porous particles is suitably small. Both parallel and series self-poisoning mechanisms are considered. Analytical solutions, uniformly valid in time, are obtained for isothermal catalyst effectivenss factors with n-th-order and Michaelis-Menten reaction kinetics and general order of deactivation. These are successfully compared with numerical solutions calculated by others for first-order kinetics and first-order parallel and series deactivation in spherical and slab pellet geometries.
