Abstract At 25°C, virgin female Pectinophora scutigera were paired with a single virgin male of the same age < 1, 10, 20 and 30 d after eclosion. Delayed mating significantly reduced the proportion of females laying fertile eggs, the total number of eggs laid per female, and the duration of oviposition, but did not affect the preoviposition period, percentage egg hatch, or the “effective” longevity of females (number of days from eclosion to last fertile egg laid). The number of first instars produced per female was reduced by 40.2, 55.7 and 65.9% when mating was delayed for 10, 20 and 30 d, respectively. The results are discussed in relation to the control of P. scutigera by mating disruption with synthetic sex pheromone. Copyright
