Abstract After discussing some examples of mid-latitude spread-Es this paper presents distributions showing the diurnal, annual and sunspot-cycle variations of this phenomenon. The variations are very similar to those found for mid-latitude spread-F. Also, a superposed-epoch analysis involving an investigation of spread-F occurrence relative to controls consisting of nights of high spread-Es occurrence showed a relationship of high significance. A similar analysis using spread-F occurrence relative to daytime spread-Es controls also suggested a relationship between these parameters. The results presented in this paper together with results from previous work suggest strongly that the two phenomena (spread-Es and spread-F) are produced by the same or similar disturbances. Also it seems likely that the disturbances responsible for spread-F during night hours are also present during daylight hours.
