Abstract Behaviour modification techniques have been used with varying degrees of success in the training of institutionalised retardates and in the control of problem behaviours. Using 3 individual cases as a basis, several types of problem behaviours and consequent programmes are described. Particular reference is made to the problems encountered in implementing and carrying out such programmes in institutions for the retarded. Suggestions for staff involvement are made.
