Abstract On the basis of the sedimentary and biotic facies characteristics of Permian strata deposited in different climatic zones, scepticism is expressed about some recent palaeogeographical reconstructions that demand a vast wedge-shaped Tethys in Asia, or movement over considerable latitudes of allochthonous terranes.
