Abstract Blasting trials were performed at R.W. Miller's Mount Thorley open cut coal mine in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales. The trials were performed as part of an evaluation of tenders for a large explosives supply contract and were conducted between August and December 1987. The following observation techniques were applied to specially designed trial and routine production blasts: observation of explosive products and measurement of density, measurement of velocity of detonation, measurement of near field vibration, measurement of burden velocities, evaluation of fragmentation, measurement of swell and throw, and observation of excavation rates.
