Abstract Pulsewidth modulation strategies are applicable to current source inverters (CSI's). In particular, space vector modulation analysis developed for voltage source inverters (VSI's) are shown to apply to CSI. Using these tools, an equivalence between modulation patterns being used for VSI and those possible for CSI is established. This means that the options such as natural sampling and regular asymetric sampling can be implemented for CSI with confidence of equivalent spectral properties. A new modulation pattern is developed and analyzed for an eight-switch CSI, implementing neutral modulation. An experimental eight-switch CSI circuit was constructed and a microcontroller was used to implement modulation based on space vector analysis. The resulting load voltage spectra show the advantage over standard eight-switch CSI.
