Abstract The numerical model of concrete should account for tension and compression softening phenomena observed experimentally. The finite element model presented here allows multidirectional strain-softening to take place within the element. The effective use of strain-softening models depends on solution routines employed with the model. Two line search based solution schemes capable of handling strain-softening behaviour are presented. The performance of the material model and solution routines are demonstrated numerically.
