Abstract A detailed description of reactor performance from start-up to final catalyst death is obtained for parallel and series self-poisoning mechanisms. One-half and integer-order kinetics, as well as Michaelis-Menten kinetics are considered in an isothermal CSTR and analytical solutions are found for the time-dependence of catalyst activity and reactant concentration by using the method of matched asymptotic expansions. Solutions are presented in the form of uniformly valid composite expansions.
