Abstract The dynamic model of a flexible Timoshenko beam with geometrical nonlinearities subject to large overall motions has been derived by using the finite element method and multi-body system formulation. The equations of motion are derived using Lagrange's equation based on the expression of the kinetic and potential energies of the flexible beam in terms of generalized coordinates. The nonlinear constraint equations are adjoined to the system equations of motion using Lagrange multipliers. An incremental-iterative method based on the Newmark direct integration together with Newton-Raphson iteration is employed here for the numerical studies. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the present method.
