Abstract During the last decade there has been widespread adoption of numerical methods in photogrammetry throughout the world. While the principal aim has been to achieve economies in the provision of sufficiently dense control for mapping with a minimum of ground survey, steady improvements in accuracy have led to the use of numerical photogrammetry for other purposes—in particular, in cadastral surveys, in much non-topographical work and even in the extension of geodetic control. The paper reviews the current situation.
