Abstract Two carbonaceous materials of known combustion kinetics were burned in a differential thermal gravimetric analyser. The temperature of the sample was raised at a rate of 15 K min-1 with a flow of excess air passing over it, and the combustion rates (based on external area) determined. The rates were similar to the accepted values obtained by other techniques.
