Abstract The new absorber for removal of N-oxides in the C & H determination consists of finely dispersed silver oxide on copper oxide. It is placed at the end of the combustion tube and kept at 210°C. Because the absorber has no affinity for water and carbon dioxide, the results are not affected by C, H, N variations between samples. It can absorb up to 9% of cone. nitric acid. The absorber withheld large quantities of oxidised mercury. It also retained oxidation products of phosphorus, boron, arsenic, halogens and sulphur. The preparation is simple, silver and copper being precipitated as oxalates, filtered and combusted.
