Abstract Editors’ Note. A bequest by Colonel Daniel Edward Evans, who died in 1951, is set aside annually for a lecture to be called the “Colonel Daniel Edward Evans Memorial Lecture”, to be on an engineering subject determined by, and at a date each year suitable to, the Faculty of Engineering. The money is made available to the Departments of Engineering in rotation: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Surveying. 0n an earlier'occasion, in 1966, another surveyor,"Professor Harry Bieusheuvel, of the University of Natal, South Africa, was the chosen lecturer (The University and the Surveyor.
