Abstract The three possible geometric isomers of PtMe2X(gly)H2O (glyH = glycine) with X and the two methyl groups mutually cis have been obtained in solution for X = Br, OH. For the isomer with both donor atoms of chelated glycinate trans to the methyl groups, PtMe2X(gly)(H2O) precipitated from solution. For the other isomer, in which coordinated water is trans to methyl and labile, dimers, [PtMe2X(gly)]2, crystallize from solution. Reactions of these compounds with added NaOH, NaBr, and 3,5-lutidine have been studied, and found to be largely controlled by the high trans effect of the methyl ligands, but much slower reactions involving sites cis to the methyl groups also occur. The methyl groups always remain cis. Rapid exchange reactions have been studied by n.m.r.
