Abstract The creep properties of Zr-1 wt.%Nb alloy were determined for temperatures between 373 and 773 K at various stress levels. Delayed yielding occurred at 373 K at stresses below the lower yield stress while at higher stresses logarithmic creep was observed. At 573 K the shape of the transient creep curves underwent a transition from hyperbolic to parabolic form. This transition is tentatively explained in terms of dynamic strain ageing being offset by recovery at higher creep strains. At 673 K parabolic creep occurred while at 773 K deviations from parabolic shape occurred. Steady state creep was not observed under any conditions of stress or temperature. Strain transients following stress changes during creep were examined in terms of recovery creep theory and the creep rate was found to be proportional to the measured recovery rate for all values of creep strain and stress at 773 K. The mean internal stress level as measured by the strain transient dip test was found to increase during the early stages of transient creep.
