Abstract/Summary New kinds of cold-atom experiments are made possible by combining magnetic traps with tightly confining optical dipole potentials. These include quantitative observations of the statics and dynamics of condensate formation driven by compression rather than cooling, as well as studies of the dynamics of quantum shock fronts in expanding condensates. We show qualitative experimental results along with comparisons with theoretical models.
