Abstract During the last year, further evidence has appeared concerning the basis of frequency selectivity in the cochlea, which may ultimately depend on a motile mechanism residing within the walls of the outer hair cells. Evidence has also appeared on hair-cell mechanotransduction, and on the way that the stimulus is coupled to the mechanotransducer channels.
