Abstract When stochastic identification is not feasible, atmospheric or water turbulence loads acting upon mechanical structures require the penalizing worst case design. To avoid this an auxiliary system-predictor is proposed for identifying both the states and the parameters of a general type mechanical structure subject to uncertain but bonded gusts. The structure may be a nonlinear multi-body system. The method extends the adaptive asymptotic identifier theory developed so far for linear systems. Stabilization of both the mechanical structure and the predictor in some regions of the state space is attempted and conditions for the stabilization are introduced.
