Abstract Carbohydrates, polyphenolic compounds, terpenoids and tannins interfere with the extraction of intact, uncontaminated total RNA from conifers. A method for extraction of total RNA from Pinus radiata is described. This method uses cesium trifluoroacetate in the ultracentrifugal separation of RNA to overcome the problems of co-purification of contaminating secondary metabolites.
