Abstract Simulated 3 unit fixed partial dentures (FPDs) were cast in one piece using the "model investing" method. A master model was duplicated in investments. Wax patterns were laid down on the investment duplicates. These combinations were sprued, invested and cast in a Ni-Cr alloy to form the FPDs. Impressions were taken of the FPDs. Selected dimensions were examined: (i) between the master model and the investment duplicates, (ii) between the master model and the impressions of the FPDs, and (iii) between the impressions of the FPDs and the investment duplicates on which the FPDs were fabricated. Distortion of dimensions was evident in (i), (ii) and (iii). Control of setting expansion of the investment duplicates would reduce distortion in (i) and (ii) and improve the accuracy of FPDs made by the "model investing" method. Greater accuracy would be obtained by also controlling distortion in (iii).
