Abstract An investigation into the relative merits of the field matching and finite element methods as tools for analysing coaxial-to-waveguide transitions is presented. The assumptions made in both methods are outlined and analysis results for each of the methods are described for a number of structures incorporating such transitions. Areas of comparison considered include computational accuracy and calculation time as well as internal and external computer memory requirements. From these results, conclusions regarding the design approach for coaxial-to-waveguide transitions are given.
