Abstract Phyllidia coelestis Bergh, 1905 is redescribed. Phyllidia alia Yonow, 1984 is recognized as a junior synonym. P. coelestis has been confused with P. elegans Bergh, P. nobilis Bergh and P. varicosa Lamarck in the past. Internal anatomy is detailed for the first time and the morphology of the penial spines is advanced as a useful additional character for the description of Phy llidia species. P. coelestis is shown to be widespread in the tropical Indo-Pacific.
