Abstract A study was made of 16 Mc/s direct backscatter echoes from Es-region recorded near Brisbane, Australia, and of ionograms at two stations separated by 150 km. Es irregularities (Esh) having "frontal" lengths ≈ 1000 km were observed moving horizontally at speeds ≈ 130 km hr-1 generally NW. Leading edges of Esh "fronts" were convex with radii of curvature ≈ 6000 km. These results were supported by analyses of ionograms recorded subsequently at an average of six stations having separations ≈ 10 km. Evidence suggests that the Es-region irregularities are associated with similar F2-region irregularities forming disturbance "fronts" which extend at least from E to F2-region. Such "fronts" resemble internal atmospheric gravity waves.
