Abstract A conference to discuss the special needs of mothers of disabled children was organized by the National Women's Advisory Council (NWAC). One hundred and fifty mothers attended from throughout Australia. They represented a wide age range and variety of handicap among their children, and were from all levels of the socioeconomic and cultural spectra. The conference identified problems common to all participants, irrespective of background. Recognition and alleviation of many of the expressed needs lie within the province of the medical profession and their colleagues. Major needs include honesty and sensitivity at diagnosis and in recurring crises; genetic counselling; availability of specialists for all aspects of developmental disabilities; a central source of information; regionalization of services; and the opportunity for mother, child and family to experience as normal a lifestyle as possible.
