Abstract It is a great pleasure to be asked to review this booklet, the publication of which marks a milestone in the history of Papua New Guinea Music. Not only is it the first of a series of volumes being prepared for publication by the Cultural Studies Division of the National Research Institute, but it is “the first thesis written by a Papua New Guinean to be solely devoted to music”—a very creditable achievement when it is remembered that PNG has been an independent country for only a little over fifteen years.
