Abstract This paper reveals the existence of a subtle flaw in an argument used previously to derive a model of software reliability. The error created by the flawed argument is shown to be significant only for very small software systems (it rapidly becomes negligibly small as system size increases). This is fortunate because the exact model is computationally intractable.
