Abstract The 55Mn NMR chemical shifts in three series of compounds, [(CO)5MnCH2C6H4X], [(CO)4(L)MnCOCH2C6H4X] and [(CO)4(L)MnCH2C6H4X], where X is a meta or para substituent and L a tertiary phosphine, trend linearly with the Hammett sigma constant of the substituent, with shielding increasing with electron donating ability of X. 1J(31P55Mn) coupling is observed in the 55Mn NMR spectra of [(CO)4(L)MnCOCH2C6H4X] complexes and in the solid-state 31P CPMAS spectra of [(CO)4(PPh3)MnCH2C6H5] and [(CO)4(PPh3)MnCOCH2C6H5-nXn], where XH and Me3-2, 4, 6.
