Abstract The Raman spectra of antimony triiodide in solution and solid phases has been measured. The spectrum in solution consitting of bands at 187 cm-1(A1) 182 cm-1(E) and 88 cm-1(A1) was assigned on the basis of a C3v point group symmetry while the spectra in the solid state consisted of eight bands which were assigned on the basis of an R3̄ space group (S6 factor group). The bands in the solid were 177 cm-1(Au) 160 cm-1(Ag) 147 cm-1(Eu) 138 cm-1(Ag) 89 cm-1(Eu) 67 cm-1(Eg) and 43 cm-1(Eg).
