Abstract In the trialkyltin halide-catalysed decomposition of hexamethylditin to tetramethyltin and "dimethyltin" the halide itself is the electrophilic reagent, not the dissociated cation, as previously suggested. Studies with trivinyltin chloride show that trivinyltrimethylditin is not formed during the decomposition.
