Abstract The parameters of the axial dispersion model can be estimated from input-output data by the method of weighted moments as used by Michelsen and Ostergaard[6, 7]. This involves a direct fitting of particular values of the transfer function and its derivatives. This paper discusses the extension of their method to other models, in particular, orthogonal models, and presents a convenient mode (or mean) matching method for choosing the best weighting factor for use with the method. The relationship of this method to the Laguerre Function method is also demonstrated.
