Abstract The angle reading mechanism of the modern electronic theodolite is totally different from the classically accepted optical system due to the implementation of an electro-optical read encoded glass disc. This paper discusses some of the different systems utilised by different manufacturers. These are grouped as the incremental, absolute and dynamic methods, and reference is given to specific instruments.
