Abstract The use of Pt/Al2O3 and PtRe/Al2O3 as reforming catalyst is well established. Industrially many alternative schemes are trialled to determined if the performance of the reformer can be improved. Recently, it has been suggested that the addition of some zeolite catalyst into the reforming system will improve the overall reformer performance. With the aim of examining this effect, tests have been done in our laboratory using two varieties of reforming catalyst [Akzo Chemie Ketjen catalysts CK303 and CK433 (The Netherlands)] and two varieties of zeolite catalysts [Riekert ZSM-5 (BASF, F.R.G.) and a laboratory-made ZSM-5] with n-heptane and n-hexane feed. In all cases no apparent improvement was observed by the addition of ZSM-5. The results are discussed in light of the established behaviour of all the catalysts.
