Abstract For products sold with warranty, the total cost per item to the manufacturer comprises the manufacturing cost and warranty servicing cost. The warranty servicing cost can be reduced by improving reliability through better design involving redundancy. However, this increases the manufacturing cost per item. In this paper optimal redundancy strategies to minimize the total cost per item to the manufacturer are studied.
