This dissertation is an exploratory study aiming to understand more about sandplay therapy and child refugee survivors of torture and/or trauma. It also aims to investigate whether sandplay therapy can be applied to work with this specific group of children.

The study provides an in-depth discussion on the identification of child refugee survivors of torture and/or trauma, as well as the impact of war and the exile experience of refugees.

The meaning of "Sandplay therapy" is defined and its history, methods and therapeutic concepts are discussed. The relevance of sandplay therapy to work with child refugee survivors of torture and/or trauma is highlighted.

To assist this exploratory study, a questionnaire was distributed throughout Australia to Rehabilitation Services for Refugee Survivors of Torture and/or Trauma, in order to explore whether "Sandplay" has been adopted as a therapeutic tool for working with child refugee survivors of torture and/or trauma or not. It was found that this approach is currently in use in two Australian states.
