Formatted abstract
The sequence in the Lockyer Valley region consists of a series of freshwater Mesozoic sediments, which have been gently folded and subsequently overlain by Tertiary basalt flows. Differences in the resistance of the formations to erosion have strongly influenced the present land forms. 

The Jurassic sequence is conformable throughout and consists of the following formations: The Helidon Sandstone (at the base), the overlying Marburg Sub-group which is divisible into the Lower and Upper Marburg Formations, and the Walloon Coal Measures lying at the top of the sequence. 

It is proposed that the term Bundamba Group be used in the original sense of Cameron, 1907, to include all nonproductive sandstones between the Walloon and the Ipswich Coal Measures. The Marburg Formation of previous writers has been divided into two formations on the basis of lithology. 

The area mapped in this thesis is transitional between the Surat Basin and the Moreton--Clarence Basin. Correlation has been attempted with both the Surat Basin formations, and with the formations in the Bundamba Group in its type area south of Ipswich. McTaggart's (1963a) boundary between his upper and lower sections of the Marburg sub-group has been traced from his type area across to Reid 's original (1921) type area.
