Abstract/Summary A general approach to the analysis of processing technology is presented using the concepts of process aims, process characteristics and process costs. From an examination of the processes used in extractive metallurgy a hierarchy of process aims is identified, these aims are separation, compound formation, metal production and metal purification. The application of this methodology to process flowsheet development is described.
