Abstract/Summary As urban and suburban areas expand into previously unoccupied sites, the problem of accurately determining the locations of abandoned mine workings becomes more acute. Here we present the results of a number of three-dimensional ground penetrating radar surveys of sites where previously resources may have been mined using the bord-and-pillar technique or sub-vertical mine shafts. The data were gathered in approximate X-Y grids using a Mala towed system with an integrated GPS unit. The data were then processed using GPR-Slice (TM) software to yield time-slice maps at regular intervals. The results often yield large reflection events on the margins of the sites, which dominate the 3D-rendered surfaces of reflection amplitudes, responses from modern cultural features, and a weaker array of events in the interiors of the sites which are apparent in the time slices and which may correspond to remains of the mining operations.
