Rapt! Twenty Contemporary Artists from Japan was ambitiously billed as “one of the most adventurous international curatorial projects to be undertaken in this country”. As the keystone in a year-long series of events organised to celebrate the 2006 Japan- Australia year of exchange, the program included ten exhibitions, six residencies, public events, workshops, screenings and a symposium spread across numerous venues in Melbourne. No fewer than four curators and eleven curatorial advisors from both Australia and Japan were employed to implement the initiative, together with a Japanese sociologist and an art journalist from Tokyo.

If anyone was expecting Rapt! to offer cohesive insights into Japan, contemporary Japanese art or national identity—too bad...
