As early as year three in The Australian Curriculum: Mathematics, students are required to use digital technologies to collect and organise data, create displays, picture graphs and column graphs (ACARA, 2013). In subsequent years, the use of technology is either stipulated or recommended through the integration of technology as one of the seven general capabilities of the Australian Curriculum. Whilst the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics does not stipulate the type of technology students or teachers should use, the cost of many mathematical and statistical packages are prohibitive to schools.
