Of making many books there is no end, as a Hebrew author once observed, but every so often one appears that argues for a paradigm shift in the way we think about an important topic. Such a work, offering a major reinterpretation of a significant issue, has been written by the Israeli historian Shlomo Sand. In the following pages I shall briefly summarize his argument, proceed to offer some comments on the way in which this is developed, and, having come to a positive judgment, briefly conclude by considering the possible significance of his findings.
