Formatted abstract
We read with interest Toonkel and colleagues' perspective on mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Based on a thorough review of the available preclinical data and data from human studies for other indications, they, and evidently the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, advocate that the timing is now right for phase 1 studies of MSC therapy for this debilitating lung disease to commence. While we generally agree with their conclusions, we would like to both share our own experience grappling with the same issues they face, and advocate for a coordinated effort from basic scientists and clinicians to facilitate successful translate of this technology...
